Winter in Zion National Park

Zion National Park is open year-round. Winter is an incredible time to visit the park, sometimes it might even feel like you have the whole place to yourself. Dependent on weather, trails may experience variable closures based on trail condition but winter in Zion definitely has its advantages. 

Wildlife:
Winter brings about some unique opportunities to see wildlife in Zion National Park. With the trees clear of leaves it opens up visibility and space on the branches offers the increased possibility of seeing large birds such as: California Condors, Bald Eagles and more.

Shuttles:
The shuttle program at Zion National Park runs most of the year, while it is running, private cars are not permitted in the Main Canyon. The winter schedule varies, but when shuttles are not running visitors able to drive right to the different trailhead.

Landscape:
If you catch the timing just right, snow and waterfalls area some of the highlights of winter. The juxtaposition of Zion Canyon and a snow frosting is something you will never forget.

How to Dress:
Zion has mostly sunny days but winter temperatures can still be quite cold. It is important to know the weather you will encounter and dress accordingly. Zion's high canyon walls in the winter can block sun exposure earlier in the day so it can get colder and darker quicker. If your plans include venturing into the water on hikes like The Narrows, it is important to consider insulated shoes and a wet/dry suit.
