The Canyon Overlook trail is one of the few trails that is located in the East Canyon of Zion National Park. It is an easy hike with magnificent views of the Main Canyon and switchbacks below.
Hiking Canyon Overlook
Canyon Overlook is a great bang for your buck hike. It is not very long or challenging but offers absolutely wonderful views. The trail starts with a set of stairs that gives most of the elevation gain, from there it is quite moderate until you reach the outlook.
This trail highlights walking along and below beautiful sandstone walls. There are sheer drop-offs but many have guardrails. With the proper caution this is a great trail for many ages and capabilities.
Getting to Canyon Overlook
This hike is located in the Upper East Canyon. It does require a private vehicle to access, parking is limited. If you are beginning from the visitors center, you pass the Main Canyon entrance and continue on Highway 9 towards the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel. The trailhead will be found soon after exiting the tunnel. There are two parking lots and some roadside parking as indicated on the map below.
Preparing for Canyon Overlook
This is an easy hike, but it is important to know that there are some exposed edges to be prepared for. Bring enough water and sun protection.
Seasons
This trail is open year-round. Spring and fall offer very moderate temperatures. Winter conditions vary in the area, it may a be a wonderfully sunny and cool day, there may be a trickle of snow, or the trail could have a good deal of snow. Summer can be busy and very hot but getting an early start can always help to make it a great time to visit this beautiful trail with stunning views.
