Utah Wildlife

Utah is home to a diverse variety of wildlife. From the majestic bison and elk to the more elusive cougar, Utah’s landscape provides an ideal habitat for many species of animals. Utah possesses a wide variety of mammals and birds and several reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates. While some species are native to the area, others have been introduced from other parts of the world.

The American Black Bear

The American Black Bear is a magnificent species thriving in Utah's lush forested areas. Weighing between 200-600 pounds, these omnivores feast on everything from berries and fruits to insects and even larger animals. Though shy and elusive, encounters with humans are rare.

The American White Pelican

The majestic American White Pelican can be found in Utah's Great Salt Lake. This large bird species weigh up to 25 pounds and has a wingspan of 8-9 feet. These social birds come together in colonies on the lake during the breeding season, typically from April through July. Once fall arrives, they head south for warmer climates.

Bison

The American Bison is a species of special interest in Utah. Once nearly extinct, the animal can now be found roaming the plains at Antelope Island State Park as well as other locations in the state. These large mammals typically weigh between 800-2000 pounds and their horns can reach up to 3 feet long!

Elk

The majestic elk is a stunning mammal native to Utah. These creatures are impressive at up to 600 pounds and standing five feet tall at the shoulder. Their signature reddish-brown coat and enormous antlers make them a sight to behold. You won't want to miss their haunting bugle call during mating season.

Moose

Discover the majestic and powerful moose, commonly found in Utah. These impressive mammals can weigh up to 1,800 pounds and reach a towering height of 6.5 feet at the shoulder. Mountain Lions

The impressive Mountain Lion is a large carnivorous mammal that calls Utah its home. These amazing creatures can reach up to 150 pounds and stretch up to 8 feet long. Sporting a tawny brown coat and an extraordinarily long tail, Mountain Lions are known for their remarkable stealth and agility, making them impressive hunters. These gorgeous wildcats, also known as cougars or pumas, are typically solitary animals.

Pronghorn

Pronghorn are a species of ungulate mammal found in Utah. These magnificent creatures can soar up to four feet tall at the shoulder and weigh up to 150 pounds. Their tan coat and white underparts give them a unique look. However, what really sets them apart is their black-and-white facial markings and their incredible speed and endurance. Pronghorns are renowned for their ability to run up to 60 miles per hour.

Trumpeter Swans

The majestic Trumpeter Swan is Utah's largest native waterfowl. With a whopping wingspan of up to 8 feet and a weight of up to 30 pounds, these mesmerizing birds are hard to miss. Adorned with snow-white plumage and a striking long black beak, they are sure to catch your eye. But their signature trumpeting call truly separates them from the crowd. Wild Horses 

Utah is home to a thriving population of wild horses, descendants of Spanish colonizers’ domesticated horses from the 16th century. These majestic creatures can be found in the Onaqui Mountain and Sulphur Herd Management areas, among others. Although considered “feral,” these wild horses are lovingly protected and managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to prevent overpopulation and overgrazing. Effective methods like sterilization and adoption programs are utilized for population regulation.

Not only is admiring the wild horses a popular tourist attraction in Utah, but it also showcases the state's rich cultural and historical significance. These equine icons represent freedom, beauty, and strength, captivating the hearts of visitors and locals alike.
