For those looking to challenge themselves a bit further, there is also The Backside of Alta, which provides access to a variety of steep terrain and chutes that will truly test any skier's mettle. This area is serviced by the Sunnyside double chairlift and also offers access to some of Alta's most famous runs, including Collins Lift.
The quality of Alta’s powder is no less than exceptional and visitors can expect roughly 547 inches of snowfall on average per season. Alta can be accessed via the Ikon Pass, Gold Pass, Mountain Collective Pass, Yeti Pass, Ski City Super Pass, and the Ski Utah Passport, which has definitely increased its crowds. Because Alta doesn’t allow snowboarders on its slopes, the powder is more or less preserved—at least, that’s what Alta skiers claim!
If you’re planning to stay a while, Snowpine Lodge is the finest resort hotel and boasts 54 luxurious guest rooms. Alta also has 4 other ski resorts embodying its quintessential ski culture, as well as options for condos and vacation rentals.

History
Alta Ski Resort in Alta, Utah was one of the first ski resorts to be developed in the United States. It was founded in 1938 and was discovered by the noted skier Alf Engen in 1935. Engen saw the potential of the area and wanted to make it accessible for skiers from all over the world. To make this possible, he helped develop a lift system that allowed people to access Alta’s pristine powder.
In its early years, Alta was known primarily as a destination for ski touring, as well as a training ground for ski racers. Over the years, as lift technology continued to improve and become more accessible, Alta began to draw in larger crowds each winter season.
Today, Alta Ski Resort is still known primarily as an expert’s paradise with some of the best terrain around. Between its two distinct areas, Albion Basin and The Backside of Alta, there is something for everyone to enjoy, no matter their skill level.
