Brigham Young University

Brigham Young University (BYU) is a private, non-profit research university located in Provo, Utah. It is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). BYU is the largest religious university in the United States.

History

BYU was founded in 1875 to provide higher education in a faith-based environment. The university was named after Brigham Young who was the second president of the LDS Church and a pioneer of the American West. Over the years, BYU has grown substantially and offers a wide range of academic programs and degrees.

Current Enrollment

As of fall 2021, BYU has a total enrollment of approximately 32,000 students. The majority of these students come from the United States, but there are also a significant number of international students from over 100 countries. The top five states that represent the student population are Utah, California, Texas, Idaho, and Arizona.

In 2021, U.S. News & World Report ranked BYU #66 in its “National Universities” category, and #1 in its ”Top Performers on Social Mobility” category. BYU has several highly ranked programs one of which is the Marriott School of Business (ranked #22). Other top-ranked programs at BYU include its nursing, engineering, and education programs.

The university has a strong athletics program and part of the NCAA Division I and the West Coast Conference. The sports talent is highlighted in a variety of sports including football, basketball, and track and field. The BYU football team in particular has a rich history of conference titles and bowl game appearances.
