Tim Hughes - Voice of Glory

Tim Hughes Announcer
While not retiring from many of his voice opportunities, Tim Hughes is stepping away from his morning show role on Utah's KSL radio, and as co-host with Amanda Dickson of the popular Saturday morning KSL Outdoors radio show. "It's been a great run for Tim and we're excited for a little extra time together to ski and enjoy so many more things together, says his wife Becki. "Tim will continue with many of his voice projects for the University of Utah and Las Vegas Raiders football, along with his worldwide work with Glory Kickboxing. Tim's voice talent has taken us to many destinations and we've enjoyed getting to know people and places within many countries."

Hughes has had a 45+ year career in radio in which he has had the opportunity to be involved in multiple Olympic games and interface with famous personalities from around the world. He has garnered over 20 Utah Broadcaster awards, and has been a four-time recipient of awards from the Society of Professional broadcasters.

For 23 years Tim Hughes has also anchored the KSL Outdoors radio show with his co-host Russ Smith where they have featured everything to do in Utah's outdoor environment, including fishing, skiing, hiking, mountain biking, scenic drives, and visitation to Utah's many other scenic attractions.
“We've been broadcasting together for a couple of decades,” says Smith, “and we've traveled on our motorcycles together through the western states and western Canadian provinces. He's been a great guy to work and travel with. With our diverse backgrounds and experiences, in radio conversations, Tim and I have been able to compliment each other.”
Hughes has seemingly interviewed just about every possible official that has something to do with the outdoors in Utah. "Tim conducts a radio interview as comfortably as he walks down a street. He leads a conversation in such a smooth and efficient way, and he brings out the crux of the message in any topic. We will miss participating with him on KSL Outdoors radio show each week", says Mark Wade of RoadTripsWest.com who, together with business partner Bob Grove, has been a five-year weekly guest on the KSL Outdoors radio show. "Working with Tim Hughes has been an incredible journey. What a privilege it's been to share the hidden gems of our highways, byways, and backroads of a state and region we love so much with Tim, and Russ,” adds Grove.

History – A Passion For Radio

In the early 1990s Tim and and his wife, to be, both worked at KOSP/Z104 a Salt Lake City Country Radio Station. Becki was a sales representative, and Tim worked on-air. They started dating in January 1995 and both went to work for Clear Channel Broadcasting / iHeart Media, and then got married in June 1997. Due to some industry changes in the late 1999 Tim lost his job as morning co-host on 570 KNEWS radio and Becki suggested that they build a home-studio for Tim to build a business doing voice-over work. Becki assured Tim that she could cover the bills while he got his new voice-over business started. She knew Tim had the talent and it didn’t take long for business opportunities to come his way

“It really picked up with Tim doing the voice introduction for KUTV News in Salt Lake City, that led to Tim being asked if he could MC an MMA fight at a downtown Salt Lake City club,” say Becki. That opportunity subsequently led to great opportunities such as...

  • Arena voice of the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympic Games.
  • Ring Announcer of Glory Kickboxing (worldwide).
  • Stadium announcer for University of Utah football team.
  • Stadium announcer for the Las Vegas Raiders football team

“Tim has a versatile talent that very few on air personalities have; he has been able to interview dignitaries such as the former Senator John Glenn at Cape Canaveral before he took a historic flight into space at the age of 77. He was also able to interview one of broadcasting's most notable newscasters, Walter Cronkite,” adds Becki.

What's In A Week

A recent week-long schedule for Hughes might include reporting the News on KSL Radio in Salt Lake City, conducting interviews with high profile personalities, hosting KSL Radio’s Outdoor show, flying quickly to Europe to ring announce for Glory Kickboxing, and then return home for a Saturday stadium announcer gig for the University of Utah football team, and finally fly to Vegas on Sunday to stadium announce the Raiders football game. Exhausted yet? This has often been part of Hughes' recent schedule and Becki says he wouldn’t change it for anything.

What's Next?

Tim's voice is a valuable commodity that continues to be appreciated by many industry professionals. Hughes and his son Casey have worked together facilitating the in-stadium announcing for the Las Vegas Raiders professional football team, and for the University of Utah Utes football team. He plans to continue to also do his ongoing voice-over work for commercials, promotions, events, instructional videos, and even video games. He also is bantering-about the idea of starting a podcast that would continue his pursuit of highlighting Utah's great outdoors.

“He’s an amazing dad to his four kids, my two boys and a Grandfather to 10 grand-kids and two great grand-kids,” adds Becki. “He’s retiring from Broadcast Radio and KSL Radio however, he’s not retiring from the other work he’s been doing. His love for the outdoors, both summer and winter will continue to give him the energy to pursue utilizing his golden voice.”
