San Juan River
The San Juan River flows through the heart of the Goosenecks State Park and is often referred to as “the bend in the river” or "gooseneck". This incredible geological feature was created by the meandering of the San Juan River, which has slowly cut away at layers of sedimentary rock. The result is a series of winding loops and turns, creating a stunning landscape for visitors to explore.
The San Juan River has been an important resource for the local Native American tribes who have lived in the region for centuries. They used the river as a way to travel through the canyonlands and beyond, making it a key part of their culture. The river is also known to be home to a variety of species of fish, making it a great destination for fishing.
The Goosenecks
The Goosenecks of the San Juan River are a particularly interesting geological feature, providing visitors with an amazing view. As the river has meandered its way through the canyon, it has created a series of deep and steep curves or “goosenecks”. These winding loops form incredible patterns in the rocks and create an impressive landscape for visitors to explore.
The formation of the Goosenecks is a result of the fast-moving waters of the San Juan River, which quickly erode away at layers of sedimentary rock. This has created a captivating view for visitors and provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about geology and explore some of Utah’s incredible landscapes.
The Goosenecks can be accessed from the Visitor’s Center, where there is a path that leads down to the canyon floor. From here, visitors can walk along the rim of the canyon and take in the spectacular views. The cliffs surrounding the river are steep and imposing, creating an awe-inspiring backdrop for visitors to admire.
