Sevier County, Utah, is an area steeped in history and culture. Located in central Utah, the county encompasses much of the state’s high mountain range known as the Wasatch Mountains. The county seat is Richfield, a small town located at the mouth of the Sevier River Valley. Richfield was founded in 1864, making it one of the oldest towns in Utah. It was originally established as an important stop on the Pony Express trail and later became a popular travel destination for Mormon pioneers.

Sevier County is full of outdoor recreational opportunities. Those who are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life will find plenty of activities to do here. Situated in a fertile valley near the Sevier River, the towns in this area are surrounded by the majestic Pahvant Range on the west and the Wasatch and Fish Lake plateaus on the east. Numerous Indian sites have been discovered, including Sudden Shelter, an Archaic site that holds the oldest time record in eastern Utah. Sevier County has long been a crossroads for travelers, with the old Spanish Trail and renowned mountain man Jedediah S. Smith making their way through its lands. Even before white settlement, explorers like the Southern Exploring Company and George W. Bean recognized the allure of this area. Settlements began in the 1860s but were met with challenges during the Black Hawk War, leading to their abandonment. However, resilience prevailed, and by 1870, successful resettlement efforts took place.

Geography

Sevier County covers an area of 2,862 square miles and features a variety of landscapes. From the vast plains in the east to the towering peaks in the west, there's something to explore for everyone. The western region is home to two mountain ranges—the Pavant Mountains and Fish Lake Plateau—with elevations ranging from 6,000 to 10,000 feet. The county's highest peak at 10,737 feet is situated on Fish Lake Plateau.
