Juab County is a county located in the U.S. state of Utah. It lies at the western edge of the state, adjacent to Nevada and Arizona. As of the 2019 estimates, its population was 10,801 people, making it one of the least densely populated counties in the country. The county seat is Nephi, and its largest city is Levan.

The county is named for the Juab Valley, which was originally settled by Mormon pioneers. The valley had a large population of Native Americans before its settlement, and much of the county still remains in its natural state. It features some of the most beautiful landscapes in Utah, from mountain ranges to red sandstone cliffs and canyons.

History

Juab County, located in the Basin and Range physiographic province, offers a diverse landscape of fertile farmland, valleys, and mountains. The county boasts the impressive Mount Nebo, standing at 11,877 feet, as well as the beautiful Juab Valley near Nephi. On the western side, you'll find broad valleys and low desert mountains, while the eastern side is home to the majestic Wasatch Mountains.

Juab County also holds historical significance, with archaeological sites from the Archaic and Fremont-Sevier cultures. The Nephi Mounds, in particular, are a significant agricultural site in the eastern Great Basin. Additionally, a part of the Goshute Indian Reservation is situated in the county's northwest corner.

Throughout history, notable explorers such as Dominguez-Escalante, Jedediah Smith, John C. Frémont, John W. Gunnison, and J.H. Simpson have traversed through Juab County, each leaving their mark. The county's borders have undergone several changes since its creation in 1852, including the removal of the western portion to form part of Summit County, Nevada.

Geography

Juab County is situated in the western part of Utah and covers an area of 2,945 square miles. It lies at the edge of the Great Basin Desert, with mountains to its east and lower desert valleys to its west. The county is bordered by Millard County to the south, Emery County to the east, Tooele County to the north, and Nevada to the west.

The county features numerous mountain ranges including the Wasatch Range in the east, the Deep Creek Mountains and Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge to the south, and Mount Nebo, one of Utah's highest peaks at 11,877 feet. The lowest point in Juab County is 4,500 feet above sea level near Levan.
