Duchesne County is located in northeastern Utah and it’s part of the Uintah Basin. The county seat is Duchesne, but its largest city is Roosevelt. The population of the county was estimated at 18,125 in 2018.

Native Americans originally inhabited the area that would eventually become Duchesne County for thousands of years. The Ute people were among the first tribes to establish settlements in this area.

In the early 1800s, fur traders and mountain men began exploring the area, but it wasn’t until 1855 that Duchesne County was officially established. The county was named after Father Eugene Duchesne, a priest from France who established missions in Utah.

Today, Duchesne County is home to vibrant communities and many opportunities for outdoor recreation. It’s bordered by the Uinta Mountains on the east and the Wasatch Mountains on the west, making it a great spot for skiing, snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, camping, and hiking.

History

Instead, it was settled by independent individuals who took advantage of the federal Homestead Act to claim 160 acres of land. These determined homesteaders had to demonstrate their commitment to farming the land. After five years of hard work, improving their property, and paying $1.25 per acre, they were granted ownership of their homesteads. Established in 1914, Duchesne County was formed from a portion of Wasatch County, showcasing a rich history and heritage. Geography

Duchesne County is situated in the eastern part of Utah, on the edge of the Uinta Mountains. The county borders Summit and Wasatch counties to the north, Carbon County to the east, Emery and Sanpete counties to the south, and Duchesne River to the west. The largest city in Duchesne County is Roosevelt, whose population is 6,062 (2018 estimate). Other cities include Myton to the north, Duchesne to the south and Fruitland to the east.
