History
Rockport State Park was established in 1966 and is one of the oldest state parks in Utah. The Wanship Dam, built between 1954 and 1957, lies within the park boundaries and created the beautiful Rockport reservoir. This area is known for its spectacular scenery, with views of the surrounding mountains and forests.
The Rockport Reservoir was named after the former town of Rockport, which, in the 1950s, was almost submerged by the Reservoir. The Rockport Reservoir is a great spot for fishing, as it is stocked with salmon, trout, bass and other species. The reservoir also offers excellent camping opportunities, with several campgrounds located around the lake. Visitors can enjoy boating and watersports in the Rockport Reservoir area as well.
Wildlife
Rockport State Park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including deer, elk, moose, beaver and bear. There are also over 150 species of birds that can be found within the park boundaries. This includes owls, eagles and ospreys that can often be seen soaring through the skies. Visitors may also spot reptiles and amphibians such as snakes, frogs and lizards.
Geology
The park is also known for its unique geology. The Red Fleet Reservoir is actually a remnant of an even larger lake that existed in tRockport State Park in Peoa, Utah is home to some fascinating geological features. It has a variety of rock formations, including sandstone cliffs and buttes, limestone hills and sedimentary deposits.
