How the Dunes Formed
The sand dunes formed as a result of two main factors - the availability of sediment (sand) and wind. The nearby Navajo Sandstone formation provided an abundant source of sediment, which was then pushed across the landscape by strong winds. This process is known as 'aeolian' deposition and has been occurring in this area for thousands of years.
The sand dunes shift gradually over time, with the wind blowing them further inland or creating new ones along the edges. The largest sand dune in the park is about 100 feet tall, and it is constantly moving due to wind action.
How the Dunes Got Their Color
The sand dunes have their distinctive pinkish color due to the presence of Hematite, an iron oxide mineral. This mineral was originally part of the Navajo Sandstone formation and was deposited in the area as sediment when it eroded over time. Since Hematite is highly resistant to weathering processes, it has remained in place even after thousands of years. This is why the sand has maintained its pinkish hue, even after being subjected to wind and water action.
The Hematite content in the sand also gives it a unique sparkle, which can be seen when the sun reflects off of it. This is one of the reasons why Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park has become such an attractive destination for visitors who come to explore its magnificent landscape. The combination of pink and sparkly sand makes for a truly breathtaking sight to behold.

Venturi Effect
The 'Venturi effect' is an important factor in the formation of sand dunes. This phenomenon occurs when air passes through a narrow space, creating a strong suction that pulls material along with it. The effect can be seen in action at the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, where the wind blows through narrow passages between the dunes, carrying sand along with it.
The Venturi effect also helps to shape the dunes themselves, creating tall ridges and steep slopes as sand piles up against natural barriers such as rocks and vegetation. The unique shapes of the dunes are further accentuated by the wind, resulting in a beautiful landscape that visitors can explore.
