In 1877, the St. George Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was dedicated and remains a key landmark in the city today. The city quickly became a hub of commerce and industry, with businesses such as the St. George Cooperative Mercantile Institution providing goods to settlers. The first bank in Utah was also established in St. George, and several other businesses that are still in operation today were founded during this period.
